The number of optometry schools in America is limited – there are 20 schools in all, including the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. That makes it just 19 schools in the whole of USA. There’s more grief – the class size of each school is restricted. That means to get into optometry schools, a student must get great grades. Here’s how such schools deliver education:

The Doctor of Optometry (OD) Degree

Optometry schools offer the OD degree. The program is full-time and takes four years to complete. Every school offers its students access to physical and human resources to supplement their studies. Students have to engage in research and clinical work as well. After graduating, the student becomes competent enough to practice in any part of America.

Optometry Schools – Minimum Requirements

The minimum requirements are demanding because the schools are few. The most demanding schools require applicants to complete courses in psychology, biology, physics, statistics, chemistry (general, organic, and biochemistry), and physiology. Though non-demanding optometry schools include these subjects in their first year curriculum, it is best that the student prepares and includes these courses in his field of study before applying for an OD degree.

Coursework

Getting a OD degree is tough work. Students must complete courses in bacteriology, immunology, basic sciences, genetics, neuro-anatomy, etc. They also must complete an OD thesis.

Students also have to participate in clinical activities and assist in patient care. They have to gain experience by working in clinics where they must learn to examine patients, understand how medicine is prescribed, prescribe therapies, and manage procedures including emergency and advanced diagnostic procedures. They also get to work in specialty clinics where they must participate and assist in the treatment of ocular disease, binocular vision, occupational vision and other complex conditions impacting the visual system.

Reputed optometry schools typically sign teacher-exchange agreements with other schools. Students are also required to participate in community welfare programs.

Licensure

OD degree holders can start their practice after obtaining a license from the state. Optometry schools sufficiently prepare the student for the state licensing exams. Here’s what the graduate has to go through in order to get a state license. The following state exams are based on laws prevalent in the state of California. Graduates should note that every state has its own laws.

All students who want a license in California must pass a 3-part exam conducted by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. The exam includes a hands-on test in clinical skills. In addition to these exams, the graduate must also pass the State Board’s Optometry Laws and Regulation exam.

All practicing graduates are also required to complete a certain number of hours in continuing education every 2 years. The continuing education must cover specific eye conditions like ocular infections, glaucoma, steroid use, etc.

Residency Programs and specializations offered by Optometry Schools

About 20% of new students choose a residency. A residency is typically a 1-year program and is considered very important. Residency students are expected to specialize in any one of the following:

Primary care

Pediatrics

Contact Lenses/Cornea

Low vision/Geriatric

Binocular vision

Ocular disease

Residents also must complete a research project related to their specialty and help teach other OD degree students. Every residency program is impacted by the funding that a college receives.

The market for fresh OD degree holders

There is a huge clinical faculty demand across USA for ODs with residency training. The paycheck’s handsome and so, many graduates choose to teach after completing their residency program. Every OD must obtain a state license before starting a practice or getting employment in a healthcare setting.

Optometry schools – Strengths

The number of optometry schools is limited and demand for admissions is high, and therefore every school is picky and choosy about new admissions. This is why most schools boast that they are host to top-ranking students.

Most optometry schools give access to a wide range of educational opportunities. Students participate in clinical work, research, studies, work at externship sites, and more, and can expect to get a 360-degree experience of the profession.

The school also prepares students adequately for state licensure.

Optometry Schools – Challenges

Optometry students represent a confluence of cultures, race and ethnicities. Students can be Asian, Caucasians, Hispanic, African or from any other race. Managing such a culturally diverse body of students sometimes poses a challenge.

Getting top-class faculty is another challenge. There is a shortage of optometry faculty across America even though the number of colleges is small.

Funding gets in the way of residency training and many times funding limitations make the school accommodate a lesser number of residents per year.

Conclusion

This was all the information you ever needed to know about optometry schools. If you want to become an optometrist, then you must plan very early because the number of schools and faculty is not going to increase in a hurry. Good luck.

Optometry could be a rewarding career, if one likes caring for people. To further the optometrist career, one must attend an optometrist school. This is one of the top income earning professions. According to the Jobs Rated Almanac, optometry ranks at the 40th place out of nearly 250 jobs. The ranking is based on six key factors such as income, environment, employment growth, security, physical demands and stress.

There are not many optometrist colleges and therefore, quite competitive to get into. In the US and Canada, there are a few accredited colleges and Puerto Rico has one where a doctorate in optometry could be obtained. The schools have their own criteria for admission, fees and the number of applicants accepted. Selecting an optometric school relies on several factors such as size, cost, location and some more. For specific requirements of all the colleges, check out the pages of ASCO, or the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.

Getting into optometrist schools requires plenty of preparations. Most colleges require the candidate to complete an undergraduate degree before they can be accepted. However, a few of the schools may allow candidates who have completed all the class requirements to apply as well. Individual colleges have their own requirements. However, the undergraduate students generally taken in may include microbiology, biology, organic chemistry, chemistry, physiology, human anatomy, calculus, physics, social sciences, English and others. Select the one you would like to attend and check its specific requirements.

The application process and admission to schools are specific to each, with each having its own guideline. Getting in is very competitive and the schools are extremely selective. Their requirements vary, and you should carefully prepare all material for the school you wish to attend. Among the material needed, generally required are letters of recommendation, transcripts of your undergraduate work, experience or extensive knowledge in the field. Some colleges may also require a personal essay on why you want to be an optometrist. One requirement is a key factor required by all schools, the Optometry Aptitude Test or the OAT.

Individual optometrist colleges have their own deadlines for submitting the applications and other required materials. For proper processing, it is better to collect all materials required and send it in early. You have to register for an OAT test, which has its own deadline. Once all applications and materials have been received, and the OAT test completed, the school selects and invites applicants for interviews. The interviews are usually with the staff and other senior students.

Applicants are then judged on several factors such as the OAT scores, leadership skills, GPA, extra-curricular skills, and many more. The cost, housing and curriculum vary and are dependent on the school you are interested to attend. Therefore, you may have to check each of the schools thoroughly and select the one that fits your requirement best.

For becoming an optometrist, you must obtain the doctor of optometry degree, which is also called OD. This is achieved by completing the 4-year program from a university or college accredited by ACOE or Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. You will have to pass the Optometry exams conducted by the National Board Examinations. Only a selected number of candidates are taken in each year. The minimum amount of time taken to finish being seven years, of which, three years are for the undergraduate education and the remaining four for the school.

The cost of the program for doctor of optometry varies among the school. This is mainly because of differences in clinical, cost per credit and other fees. The colleges also charge fees for several other services such as equipment and supplies, clinical and labs, health insurance and others. When you add up everything, including supplies, books, living expenses, tuition, and fees, the amount can be quite big. Therefore, it is right to say optometry schools are quite expensive.

OptomCAS or Optometry’s Centralized Application Service has now made it easy to apply to all optometric colleges. Potential students can now make a centralized web-based application with all the information, including letters of recommendation, college transcripts, and honors. The OptomCAS will send their applications to multiple optometric schools on behalf of the candidates. This removes the necessity for multiple applications, letters and transcripts. However, candidates will still have to follow individual requirements. Once the optometric training program is completed, the optometrist becomes licensed and is able to start their career. They may also opt for a residency for additional training. There are several different specialty trainings available in any optometrist school.

An optometrist assistant is specially trained in assisting the optometrist, and helps to provide full-scope optometric care to patients. Optometrists can offer a wider range of services in a more effective and efficient manner with the help of assistants. Assisting is a gratifying and stimulating career choice, since they make a significant difference in people’s daily lives. The OA also helps the optometrists provide exemplary health care services.

Optometric assistants work with people of all ages and gender, from all walks of life, from infants to seniors, including the differently abled. In the health care environment, the assistants and patients rarely deal with blood, death or pain. The ultimate focus daily is to keep eyes as healthy as possible and provide clarity of vision. In optometric practice, there is never a dull moment. Assisting is deeply satisfying, fun and challenging.

Responsibilities of assistants are varying, and could include reception handling, telephone answering, preliminary testing of patients, training patients to use contact lenses, adjusting and repairing eyeglasses, advising patients on frame and lens selection, teaching low vision patients to use special devices, helping children in visual skills practice and chair side assisting of the optometrist.

The OAC or Optometric Assistant Course has long-term goals. This is to improve the efficiency and quality of vision care. This is done by upgrading the knowledge of assistants and making them valued and highly trained personnel.

The syllabus has been designed for providing the participants with proper understanding of the fundamental principles of assisting. Assistants gain an in-depth knowledge of the various techniques, procedures and equipment needed to function efficiently and smoothly in the practice of optometry. This course has to be completed in a year from the date of enrollment. Upon successful completion of the study, a certificate is issued to the participant.

There are several benefits to the program. The OAC helps the optometric practice get highly trained expert optometric assistants. This improves the efficiency and quality of patient care, while fostering greater pride and confidence in the high level of performance. Educated and motivated assistants can be ensured of greater longevity of employment, while encouraging prospective or new employees to work towards a goal by bettering themselves. The program also enhances the standardization and effectiveness of in-office training programs.

Graduates are granted certification status from the respective Association of Optometrists. This is a certificate worth framing. The recipient has the right to use the title of the Certified Optometric Assistant and its initials, COA, when he or she is employed by an optometrist and working in a practice.

For enrolling in the Optometric Assistant Course, it is required that the candidate be currently employed in an optometric practice and working in the practice of an oculist. During the entire study, the OA must continue to be employed. The course is most suitable for assistants who have one year of experience at the minimum. Candidates with less than a year’s experience may also register, however, the optometrist who is sponsoring the candidate, may have to spend more time mentoring such individuals.

The OAC is a remote learning course, with most of the practical knowledge coming from the office experience of the supervising optometrist and his guidance. The assistant can build his framework of knowledge with the course material provided. Integration of the practical and academic aspects of this program comes from the guidance provided by the oculist.

The employing optometrist becomes an integral part of the program by his participation. Whenever the OA finds it difficult to understand, the oculist should be ready to explain the necessary techniques and concepts. In addition, the OA is required to perfect his or her clinical skills, which the oculist must monitor. The course material includes a Required Skill Checklist, which the supervising optometrist has to sign for ensuring the required skills are reviewed at the practice.

There are four modules in the Optometric Assistant Course. Each module has its major topics and learning objectives. The assignments and study plan are based on these learning objectives. The course binder and textbooks cover all the required reading materials. A mandatory 3-day workshop is included in the course. A few prescribed textbooks are necessary for the participant for reference, and these may have to be purchased unless already available in the office.

Each module has its own assignment, which facilitate the learning process. They also assess the assistant’s abilities and knowledge in the field of optometry. The assistant has to mail the assignments within the scheduled dates to the National Director who grades them and returns them back to the optometrist assistant along with comments.

You might want to study to become an eye specialist, look for medical treatment for your eyes or you might just be wondering what difference there is in regard to an opthamologist vs optometrist. It is common that when people get to hear of terminologies such as opthamologist and optometrist, they immediately think that they refer to the same thing. This is partially true as both are eye specialists but the two are also very different in many aspects. The following information provided below will explain all about the two and their major differences. You will be more informed on which specialist to go to for your eye care treatment and what you can also do if you want to become an opthamologist or an optometrist.

An optometrist is someone who is mandated with the responsibility of performing regular checkups, diagnosis and also conducting tests for eye disease and conditions that arise on normal vision difficulties. They can also give medication and prescribe them too. The diagnoses of eye defects are things like cataract, glaucoma and conditions such as presbyopia, astigmatism and myopia. Even though an optometrist will only provide primary eye care, for those who have obtained license they can be allowed to provide some basic treatment for conditions like glaucoma and other eye conditions. Similarly, they will also be allowed to prescribe and diagnose although there will be some form of restrictions on their prescriptions.

An opthamologist on the other hand can carry out the roles of an optometrist but this cannot be the other way round. They can also carry out the diagnosis, treatment of vision and eye problems, prescription of eyeglasses and contact lenses. They can also perform surgeries on the retina, cornea, surgical treatment of glaucoma and ophthalmic plastic surgery.

There is also a difference when it comes to their education and training. The only similarity that comes about is that they will both require to have undergone through undergraduate as well as post graduate education with them meeting all the essential requirements. An opthamologist must have completed an undergraduate degree of their own choosing then they will be required to enroll into a medical school for four more years in order to become a doctor of osteopathic medicine, having specialized in eye and vision care.

After having completed four years of education, they will be required to spend additional three years of hospital training in their related field. This is vital as they will be in a position to learn all the skills that they will require in their future work. They may then be able to make a decision on whether they would like to specialize in a specific field or become a general opthamologist.

On the other hand, it will take you a less duration of time for you to become one. In order for you to be able to enroll in an optometry school, you will need to have an undergraduate degree. During their stay in school, you will then have to do an optometry admission test and thereafter an additional four years in order to be ready to be referred to as a doctor of optometry.

An ophthamologist will generally be responsible in carrying out very difficult eye surgeries that generally an optometrist will not have been trained to carry out. And because they take a much longer time for them to train and perform these surgeries, they then have greater speciality in the things that they do and as such the salary of an opthamologist is bound to be higher than that of an optometrist. This difference in their is salary is also attributed to the fact that there are less number of qualified opthamologists in comparison to qualified optometrists. In some circumstances, you can find an opthamologist who earns even double what an optometrist earns. This is not to say that one is at a disadvantage. Both are capable of getting to make very good money. However it is a fact that both optometrists and ophthalmologists have diverse competencies and tend to do different work. These differences will mean that they get to earn different salaries.

From the above information, it is clear that there is a distinction relating to opthamologist vs optometrist. It is essential that in the event you have an eye problem, you should be able to make a clear distinction between the speciality and capability of these two. For those who are in a dilemma of making up their mind on which profession to get into between the two, the above information will be useful to them.

The average optometrist salary is approximately $107,000. Densely populated areas and areas in which optometrists are in short supply pay more while other areas pay less. According to the Doctor’s Exchange of Washington, a fresh Optometrist starts at a salary of $90,000/year but other surveys indicate that fresh graduates also start their career at $50,000/year in areas where the supply of optometrists outpaces their demand. Louisiana pays the highest rate per hour while Puerto Rico hourly pays are the lowest.

Defining The Optometrist’s Career

A Doctor of Optometry is referred to as an optometrist. He is a healthcare professional who specializes in treating conditions related to the eye, the visual system, and everything connected to it. An optometrist can examine, diagnose and treat eye diseases, injuries, conditions and disorders.

Once upon a time an optometrist was considered as a professional who prescribed and fitted glasses and lenses. Today, all that has changed. Today’s optometrist is a primary care provider for visual care. He treats corneal injuries, ulcers, infections and any other eye diseases that can be treated by pharmaceutical means, visual problems, and poor vision conditions. He can provide pre- and post-surgical care and administer laser treatment. Optometrists also refer the patient to surgeons and order tests. They can even manage diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

The eyes are our windows to the world. A life without eyesight is joyless. Eyes are delicate, sensitive and important to every human. And, eyes require skilled care. This is why the optometrist salary is so high.

Optometrist Job Outlook

Human eyes are all over the place. When they are not working on the computer, they are watching the TV; when they are not viewing TV, they are playing games on their mobile or portables, or reading, or whatever. Humans want to eyeball everything except when they sleep and dream in Technicolor. All this eye exposure is not healthy and that is why our nation’s eyesight is weakening. Plus, Americans are aging and the life expectancy is going up. As people age, their eyesight weakens and they need care. Moreover, employers are now sponsoring eye care as well. Medicare also covers optometry. States are also busy expanding the optometrist’s scope of practice. These factors will continue to maintain and spur a robust demand for optometrists in the next decade.

Optometrists are the only type of healthcare professionals who do not have to work overtime or in graveyard shifts. Their working conditions are neat and hygienic and they don’t have to rush to attend many emergency calls.

The biggest problem with the profession is that the number of optometry schools is sparse and these schools feature a heavily-restricted class size. According to federal data, the demand for optometrists will grow at 24% till 2018. The optometrist salary will rise in proportion depending on skill-level and experience.

Optometrists do not retire easily. Many optometrists practice on a part-time basis even after retirement. This is evidence enough that the profession is very satisfying, rewarding and easy.

The Practicing Optometrist

An optometrist can start his private practice and choose to specialize in pediatrics, contact lenses, vision therapy or geriatrics. He can enter into a partnership or start a group practice. Group practice is very popular – an optometrist joins hands with other optometrists specializing in different areas and the group gets together and offers their all-inclusive vision health services under one roof. Such group practices are typically contracted by Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO).

An optometrist can also rent space in a retail outlet and practice independently. He can join hands with an ophthalmologist, practice in a hospital, act as a consultant to a corporate, and more. The practicing optometrist earns much more than the average optometrist salary. Practicing optometrists with more than 15 years of experience can easily make $175,000/year. A startup optometrist typically earns $105,000/year while working at his own pace.

Optometrists and Technology

One of the reasons why the optometrist salary is high is because an optometrist now works on very sophisticated equipment and caters to a very huge market. More and more people are switching over to contact lenses and lenses technology is getting better by the day. Optometrists use lasers to treat eye diseases and to correct conditions like near-sightedness and far-sightedness. Once upon a time, these conditions could only be rectified by wearing glasses or contact lenses.

Areas of Specialization

An optometrist can choose to specialize in treating infants (0-4 years), children, elderly (geriatrics), contact lenses, cornea conditions, vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, head trauma, binocular vision, ocular testing or occupational vision.

Conclusion

The optometrist salary is high, the profession’s work hours are regular, and the work is soul satisfying. This is why even retired optometrists choose to continue practice even after retirement. Optometrists enjoy a comfortable lifestyle as they go around making America a breathtakingly visual feast. Remember, optometrists are for your eyes only.

It is a fact that there are a number of eye doctors and experts that one can locate around, These professionals may focus their attention towards the eye, but there is no doubt about how differently they perform their respective functions. However, there are people who get increasingly confused between their differences. For this, a discussion about opthamologist vs optometrist is in order.

Some people may not feel the need to actually know the line that divides these two professions thinking that the assistance of any of them should do. However, they have to understand that there is a great deal of difference on the services that such practitioners offer. Hence, it is recommended that people will actually pay proper attention on how these two providers differ.

Optometrists are considered doctors of optometry or D. O., whereas an ophthalmologist is considered a doctor of medicine, hence, the MD extension added after their names. The former is tasked towards diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the vision such as in the case of nearsightedness, astigmatism, farsightedness, and are also able to prescribe prescription glasses lenses or contact lenses.

Meanwhile, the latter are professionals that have to graduate from a medical school after they have finished an undergraduate course. They also have to perform a one year internship before they will be accorded a doctorate degree. In addition, the jobs that they perform has something to do with performing eye examinations, refractions, and lens prescription.

In determining the difference between ophthalmologist vs optometrist, is that optometrists tend to focus their attention more towards getting visions corrected. They are also most likely to perform refractions services. Although ophthalmologists are trained to perform such procedures, these people often prefer to leave these tasks to the Dos since they tend to earn more by actually performing surgeries and other eye operations.

Thus, one must understand that as far as eye diseases are concerned, the best professional to refer to is the ophthalmologist. These providers have the necessary education and training that are required for them to carry out surgeries and eye operations to get such issue corrected. On the other hand, if they require correction of their vision, optometrists are their best choice.

People may also notice too, that are far as eye wear and such other appliances that people wear to correct their vision are concerned, the optometrists tend to have more of them in supply when compared to the ones that an ophthalmologist has. This is the reason why, cases that have something to do with vision care on the primary level are often carried out by optometrists.

Aside from getting to know the differences in the services offered by opthamologist vs optometrist, people are advised to always ensure that they are being attended to by the right professionals. They have to be sure that they are getting attended to by the right people by checking their backgrounds, their expertise, their experience, and their overall qualifications so they can be sure that such providers are going to do a good job attending to their needs.

The optometrist assistant may sometimes be referred to as optometric technician. They support the doctors who look after a person’s eye and vision care. The job of the assistants may differ depending on the field and the optometrists one is working for. Some of them do administrative jobs, while the others have simpler workloads.

Before becoming a licensed optometric technician, one needs to take a course certified by the Professional Optometry Association and pass the examinations. During the training, the students are taught the different optometric techniques and applications. This will prepare them for the number of opportunities that are available before them. However, most of the most important lessons are usually learned in experience as an assistant.

There are endless opportunities for a paraoptometric technician. He may work in health care facilities, private companies or governmental agencies. He can work for an eye doctor in a private office where the assistant mans the office most of the time. He can perform office jobs like answering the phone, writing receipts, setting up appointment or general bookkeeping.

When there are patients, he can also assist the doctors in the procedure. He also shows the patients to the examination room, instills the eye drops prior to the operation and counsels the patients. He will educate the patients about the proper eye care after the surgery and teach them the proper way of wearing lenses.

He can also work in private companies that sell some eye care products. Since he has the knowledge about the trade, he can provide sound advice to the customers and help them make an informed choice. He can help the patients to choose and purchase the best pair of eyeglasses or other eye care materials. He can also assist them in adjusting the items when necessary.

Some of them may also specialize in the preparation or distribution of items that are used to support the patient’s eye health instead of focusing on patient care. Some work in a lab where they produce, repair or coordinate eyeglasses or contact lenses. They can also coordinate with the delivery of the frames, lenses and other items.

Depending on the skills and specialties, the assistants may also have different rates. Some may have higher rates than the others. This is pretty much similar with how a nurse is rated as they work with physicians in a hospital setup. This may also be the basis of most doctors or companies in hiring an optometric technician.

The assistant must also be well groomed and equipped with good people relations and communication skills. They must be able to think analytically given the complications in this job. They must also be friendly with the customers. They can work in part time or full time, depending on the needs of the office and the hours of operation.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the opportunities for an optometrist assistant and technicians are among the fastest growing industries between 2008 and 2018. As the aging population increases, the demands for eye and vision care also grows opening more posts for this job.

It can be really worthwhile to become an optometrist. This is a good career path that you can take. When you choose this, you would have to face the dilemma of deciding where to get your education and doctorate. If you are on your way to an optometrist school already, you have to be careful with the choice of institution that you make. There are various colleges and universities offering such a program, so you need to know what areas you should look into when making your comparison.

The first things you would have to check would of course be the institution’s various credentials. You should check out the basics like their experience and their faculty as well as their curriculum. You should also make sure that you are choosing one that is accredited. They must possess an accreditation from the Accreditation Council On Optometric Education or ACOE. This will ensure that they provide education that is up to standards. It would also be wise to check out how well their graduates perform in the board exam.

It is also important to check out the kind of clinical experience that they give. Make sure that they have a state of the art eye clinic that is large enough to cater to a lot of patients. You would need a large practicing ground for your training, so it would be important that you choose one with a well-established clinic. The clinical experience is more important than the lectures and theoretical background. All schools will have the same foundational courses on anatomy and optometry, but the kind of clinical experience you would get would vary.

You should also check out the various facilities being featured by the institution. Make sure that they have updated facilities and equipments that will help you train yourself with knowledge and experience in eye care. The classroom facilities must also be good as you would be spending the next four years in them as well.

You must also check out their residency program. Again, their residency program must be accredited. It should also have strong points in the area that you want to specialize in. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of their program and rate it accordingly.

The tuition would also be a huge factor in your decision. The least expensive way to obtain your degree is through public in institutions in your own state. If you go for public institutions out of state, the difference in tuition rates can be big. Private institutions in different states does not have huge differences, but they are all more expensive than public institutions.

You should also consider the living expenses you have to make. Cost of living in different areas can vary. Make sure you can deal with the costs before you would be making your decision.

It is also recommended that you choose an institution in the area you want to practice in the future. In this way, you would already be comfortable with the area and would start to create professional connections. It will allow you to plot your career even while still a student.

It is really crucial that you pick the right optometrist school. With these tips, you can be aided in making this crucial choice.
